The Prince Consort (nlys and I)

Recommended Posts

She is the eldest daughter to the King and Queen of Ilyria and by law the next in line for the throne. She will soon be of age to start taking over the day-to-day ruling of her fathers Kingdom but a few weeks before that day her parents are mysteriously killed in their bedchambers. With her having no real experience in the matter or husband by her side, the Kingdom has swept into panic. Her advisers have told her to host a Ball immediately to find a suitable match. However, she has decided to have an open ball, where anyone can enter – be the royal, noble, soldier or mere farm boy. She is looking for love, not someone who can politically advance her status with the neighboring Kingdoms. The one who wins her hand in marriage will be named the Prince Consort.

Name: Scarlet Avelin
Age: 18
Gender: female
Role: Princess/Queen
Personality: Scarlet is a very driven person and she knows how to inspire those around her. She wants to prove herself a good ruler of her Kingdom and strive to improve the lives of her people. She does have an ugly streak of anger in her but that just comes with the territory of being a royal. She is very honest and forward, never hiding what she wants and what she wants, she usually gets. She enjoys being outside more than she does being in the palace with her advisers all day every day.
Appearance: Scarlet is tall and slim, the picture of a 'perfect Princess'. Her red hair falls to mid back, naturally curly. The bold colour making her green eyes stand out even more. Her skin is soft and pale, though she does try to get outside a bit, the duties burdened on her usually keep her from enjoying sun-kissed skin.

(I'll fix a history part for her when I can)

Dominic had been startled awake by the sound of the front door being slammed opened. He groaned and rolled over to face the wall. His father was home again after staying out all night. He could hear the clumsy footsteps of a hungover man all the way in his bedroom. He curled up and pulled his quilt over his head. He wanted nothing to do with his dad right now. Though he hated to admit it, he was worried when his dad didn't come home last night. But now he was just disappointed. "Son, have you... gotten your suit for the ball tonight?" His father was in the doorway, his shadow apparent on Dominic's wall. Dominic turned to look over his shoulder, his green eyes cool. "Yes sir, I have. And I will make sure to get groceries before I go tonight," He mumbled. There was a moment of silence, before the door clicked close. Dominic watched the dark door for a moment longer, before hauling himself out of bed.

Scarlet dipped her head to hide her yawn from her fathers, her, most senior adviser; Stephane Narcisse. She had been up since before sunrise that morning, making last minute preparations for the ball everyone in the palace pushed her to hold. It wasn't her idea and she'd be more than happy to cancel it but she had been told it would calm the nobles and the people. And if she was to hold a ball to find a potential suitor, why not break all the rules in the process and make it her own? Narcisse was telling her about some foreign noble family sending their eldest son to the ball in the hopes of creating an alliance with her family through marriage. "It would be in our, your, best interests to entertain this special guest tonight, Your Highness." Scarlet turned to face her fathers most trusted. "I will not play favourites, Narcisse. Every man that enters the palace doors tonight will get equal opportunity." The older man dips his head slightly. "Your Highness, if I may--" A quick shake of her head cuts his words off. "No, you may not. These are my final words on the matter. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more pressing matters to attend too before tonight's festivities." Narcisse bows and steps back, allowing Scarlet room to pass. She never liked that old man but her father trusted him above all the others, she wants to do her best to honour her fathers memory.

Dominic put on his normal attire that included a white tunic and brown pants. He shuffled out of his room and outside to get some water to brush his teeth. He pumped some water into a bucket and washed his face and brushed his teeth. He wetted his hair down and shook it out, raking his fingers through it so it looked a little presentable. He then dumped out the water and stretched. The lived on the outskirts of town, and if Dominic looked towards the town, he could see the castle looming over it. He wondered what women he would meet tonight at the ball. Would any interest him? Would he find a suitable wife and be able to leave his father behind. He went back inside and ate some breakfast before grabbing a list of groceries he needed to get. The ball was going to be around 8, and he had slept till one. Dominic needed to prep himself as soon as he got home from shopping. It took at least half an hour to get into town, but then he had to go from stall to stall to get what he needed.

It was already early afternoon and she was running out of time. After tonight, Scarlet will have picked a handful of potentials and her attention will be on them and the running of her Kingdom. Today is her only chance to go out among the people again as a princess. Soon she will be Queen. She was on her way to the royal families wing of the palace, her's alone now, when her lady and closest friend caught up to her. "Princess, where have you been?" She huffed. Scarlet smiled at the brown haired maid. Jessica. "In meetings all day, please tell me everything is prepared?" Jess nodded and they both hurried to Scarlet's rooms. She traded her expensive blue dress for something a little more common among the people. Jess agreed to lend Scarlet some of her own clothing. Every time Scarlet had gone down into the town, it had been as herself, the Princess. This time, she wished be to see her people from the eyes of someone else. They hurried from the palace with hoods drawn over their heads. No one was expecting Scarlet for hours. A Princess needed time to get ready for her own ball after all.

Dominic soon entered the town, standing under an awning to catch his breath. It was getting close to winter, sure. But the autumn days could still be pretty warm. Dominic could feel the sweat on his back, beading on his forehead. He straightened his back out and when he could breathe easily again, went into town. It was a busy day, definitely. The ball was tonight, and since everyone was invited, all the women and men that could attend were out and about. Dominic watched people run past him, not even giving him a second glance. A couple shop keepers said hello to him, and politely asked how his father was. Other than that, Dominic began shopping for what he needed. He needed to make sure his dad had dinner for tonight, and they were out of eggs and jerky. And if Dominic didn't get some kind of button-up shirt to go with his suit, his father would probably have a fit. Dominic perused the fruits with interest, paying for an apple and eating it as he walked.

Never before had Scarlet ever dared to do something so reckless like this. She knew very little about the lives of her subjects, it was hard when she lived every day of her life in a palace and they down here in the town. But for the first time ever, she wasn't instantly swamped with townspeople wanting to get a glimpse at their princess. Jess, knowing her way around the town, hurried them along. The further in the travelled the more crowded it got. It seemed almost everyone was accepting her open invitation to the ball. "Jess, how are we going to accommodate so many people?" Her maid turned to her with a smile. "You have a rather large palace, Princess, I'm sure you'll find the room." They shared a laugh before their path opened up into the bustling market place. Scarlet tugged on Jess's hand. "Do you have a gown for tonight?" Jess nodded, "the tailor has it ready for me to pick up soon. Let's go have a look." The two ladies headed off for the other side of the market quare, sticking close together in the bustling crowd.

Dominic sighed, eyeing the tailor shop across the road. He had to get that stupid shirt or else his father would skin his hide. No shirt goes better with a suit than a white button-up. You can't go to the ball looking like a farming Yankee. With a groan, Dominic went over to the shop. He was still munching on his apple when he slightly bumped into someone. Startled, he quickly turned to them. It was two women, they were holding hands. He tilted his head as he saw fiery red hair on the girl's head. "Sorry mi'ladies, I suppose I was so invested in getting a shirt that I bumped into you," He jested, taking another bite of apple. "Are you going into the tailor shop? Let me hold the door," He said politely, grabbing the door and opening it. He tossed his apple core off to the side and let out a grin, bowing slightly. The girl with the red hair was cute, though there was no point in flirting at the moment if there was a chance she was going to the ball later. But maybe flirting a little wouldn't hurt...

Scarlet was too caught up in all the excitement from the people around her to notice when someone bumped into her. It was something that had never happened before. Being a princess, people usually moved out of your way when they saw you coming. She remained silent when he apologized and held the door open for them. "Why thank you, kind Sir." Jess spoke for the two of them while Scarlet smiled and managed a small curtsy before entering the store. There were a few people in here already, waiting to pick up their newly made garments and Scarlet couldn't help but stare with wide eyes at the cute little store around her. She'd never set foot inside any of these places. She'd never even been to the towns market without a guard escort before. She suddenly had the urge to want to find out what it was like to live as one of her subjects, without the burden of ruling an entire Kingdom.

Dominic nodded and watched them head inside before he followed. His eyes wandered over the large expanse of dresses. That was what this shop was mostly for, was for the women. He just needed to get his shirt and leave. It was already around five and he planned on getting home by six. He glanced over the dresses, seeing the bob of red hair in the corner of his eye. He was curious who she was, and he gravitated towards them against his better judgement. "Are you two going to the ball tonight?" He asked, scanning the tailor shop for the men's section before looking down at both girls with a polite smile. "I suppose if you are in here then you are," He said with an amused tone, winking at them. Dominic was so rusty at flirting it was probably a sin, but it wasn't often that he actually saw a women he liked. He knew practically everyone in town, so it was hard to see any girl he grew up with as a romance option. This girl was new, it was like a fresh breeze to him. He was instantly curious of her. "I've heard the princess has locks as red and as beautiful as your's. The men here say red hair brings good luck."

Scarlet had a quick look around at the dresses as they waited for Jess to be called to collect her gown. They were simple and well made but beautiful nonetheless. She knew she made the right decision when she chose to have an open ball. Not only was she inviting her townspeople to the palace, they were given an opportunity to dress up and meet those they perhaps never would have otherwise. It was provided good business for some. She turned to the young lad who held open the door for them, finding her voice finally. "Certainly, we are picking up my friends gown for it." She glanced at Jess as she spoke before turning back to the beautiful young man. "And yourself, will you be attending?" Scarlet couldn't help but smile when he winked and Jess covered her mouth and turn away, her cheeks red. "Well, the Kingdom is a lucky one then, to have a princess with hair red like mine."

Dominic ran his hand through his locks, grinning. "I bet you already have a beautiful dress to wear tonight, don't you mi'lady?" He directed his question at Scarlet. He rubbed his scruff on his chin, feigning thoughtfulness for a moment before nodding, "Yes, that's why I came to town. I had forgotten to pick up a shirt for my suit. And my father says that suits only look good with the button-up types of tops." Dominic glanced towards the shirts with a small sigh. "Oh yes, very lucky indeed. She's been good to the town so far, I've no complaints about her," He paused, setting his green eyes back on the girl, "But I've never seen her, so if I had to guess, I would say your hair is more beautiful, mi'lady. Many girls would kill to have such gorgeous locks as those," He leaned back against the wall, smiling. "So, you're new around here then? I've never seen you before."

Scarlet dipped her head a little. "Indeed I do, I picked it up a few days ago. I wanted to avoide this crazy rush," she swept her hand in front of her as she spoke. She tilted her head to look up at him, he was about a head taller than her. "Your father must be a smart man, he knows what he's talking about." She took a quick glance at the line that was slowly going down, Jess would have a dress soon and they would have to leave so they could make it back to the palace to get ready in time. "Well thats good to hear." She smiled broadly at his next words, her hand reaching up to touch one of the red locks. "Your kind words are flattering, thank you, sir. But I doubt anyone could look as besutiful as the Princess." Scarlet looked back to the handsome young man. "You could say that, I live and work in the palace with my friend, Jess." She points her out in the line. "I rarely have the chance to come down to the town. We were lucky to have a chance to leave at all now, with the palace being so busy preparing for the ball." She clasped her hands in front of her as she spoke. It wasn't a lie, she did work and live in the palace, just not as a servant or maid. "What about youself? Do you live in town?"

Dominic checked the watch on his wrist, before casting his glance towards the door. He would have to grab his shirt quickly and get home before he was late. He didn't want to leave the girl behind, but she did say she was going to the ball. Hopefully he could meet her again there and speak with her. She was cute, that was for sure. And she didn't seem like a bad person either. "My father? Smart? Ha," He chuckled darkly, but didn't elaborate on it. If he said anything about his father, gossip would spread and then his father would not be happy. "Don't get the wrong idea, mi'lady. I've heard many a rumor that the princess is angelic, but your beauty is that of a princess," He smiled softly. Dominic cleared his throat and stepped back, "Ah, you work at the palace. I hope I didn't cause offense when I spoke about the Princess," He said quickly with a nervous chuckle. Dominic's cheeks became rosy and he looked down at his hands. "Well, I live right outside of town. My father owns a couple acres of wheat farms on the outskirts," He explained, rubbing the back of his neck. "I hate to cut such a nice conversation, but I must get my shirt and be on my way. I would hate to show up to the ball in this attire," He joked, gesturing to his normal clothes. "It was...nice to meet you, mi'lady," He gently took her hand and kissed her knuckles with a wink. "I hope to see you tonight," He said, picking up a shirt and paying for it. "See you!" He called as he hurried out. He had to get home before dark.

Scarlet caught the way he looked when he spoke about his father but didn't say anything, it wasn't her business to pry into the lives on the people who lived here, even if she was now Ilyria's sole ruler. It was as much their kingdom as it was hers. "Oh no, you haven't." She gave him a warm smile. "It must be peaceful out there without all the bustle of the town and castle." She saw Jess hurrying toward her with a blue gown neatly folded in her arms. She turn back to the young man. "Please, don't let me keep you, you must have a lot to do before the ball." She dipped her head to him and smiled when he kissed her hand. "It is a pleasure to meet you, I hope you enjoy the ball and find everything you are searching for." Scarlet watched him for a long moment as he did what he needed too and left. Jess stopped beside her. "Who was that devilishly good looking fellow?" Scarlet merely blushed and shrug her shoulders. "Someone I hope to run into again tonight." Jess nodded and they left the store, making their way back to the palace to prepare for the evening. They were running out of time.

Dominic blew out his breath with a smile. A new woman working at the palace, and she was very beautiful. Dominic smoothed down his hair, which was being tossed in the wind. The sun was setting when he approached his house, his shirt tucked neatly against his arm. He wondered what the girl's name was, he never asked nor gave his own. He hoped he was being rude in that way. Chewing on his bottom lip, he entered his home and set his shirt on one of the dining room chairs. "Father, I'm home. I'm leaving the ingredients for your dinner on the counter," He set the food on the counter and went into his room with his shirt to prep his attire. He could hear his father's snores through the thin walls of the house. He tried his best to ignore it while he put on his black dress pants and white shirt. The pants fit snug and the shirt was a bit loose, but he didn't mind. Dominic grabbed the jacket and slid it on, smoothing out the crinkles and buttoning it up. He didn't have any sort of bowtie or neck tie to put with his, so it would just have to do. He went over to his mirror and combed his hair, trying to decide if he should put it back in a bun or something. Finally deciding to scrape it back in a sort of ponytail, he sighed. He looked decent enough, but would be compare to the nobles or even the middle class? He could definitely be counted as lower class.

With everything in order, he left the house without saying goodbye to his father, heading towards the palace. Dominic made it into town within half an hour and up to the palace within an hour. He stood by the road, just staring up at the huge castle. Carriages came and went, dropping all kinds of people off. Most walked like Dominic though, since everyone was invited.

Jess and another member of Scarlet's personal maids helped her ready herself for the fast approaching ball. They'd made it back with a couple hours to spare and gave the both enough time to clean themselves, get dressed and do hair and makeup. Where Jess's dress was a royal blue, Scarlet's was a dark red with black and gold trimmings. Some of her hair was pinned, some braided and the rest hanging free in loose curls. All the while Scarlet couldn't shake the memory of that young farmer she'd met outside the tailor's shop. There was something about him that caught her attention and if she could try and pin that reason down, it is because he is free from the burden of political office like so many she spends her time with day in and day out in the palace. She spends all her days now with counsel members and advisers she barely remembers how life could be fun like it used too. Jess finished Scarlet's look with a small, diamond tiara nestled on the top of her head and took a step back. "Absolutely stunning. I will be amazed if you don't manage to find anyone suitable tonight, Princess." Scarlet smiled at her most trusted maid and close friend. "You look grand yourself, Jessica." After a few moments in front of the mirror, Scarlet left the royal wing and headed for the ball room. Most of her guest would have just started arriving. She took a breath to prepare for the crazy evening ahead. She will no doubt be very busy for most of the night and hoped she would have a chance to find that young man from earlier, if only to just learn his name.

Dominic was about to head inside when a hand grabbed his shoulder and yanked him back. He let a surprised gasp leave his mouth and he tried to twist around to see who it was. "Hey man! I didn't know you planned on going to the ball tonight! Bet your looking for some beautiful broad to marry like I am." Dominic turned around and smoothed out his suit, grinning at his friend Scott. Scott had on a suit as well, he even washed and combed his usually unkempt black hair. Dominic whistled, giving him a good pat on the shoulder, "You look like you're about to break some hearts in there, Scott my man," He laughed. "Are ya talkin' bout my hair, boy? It always looks this luxurious," He followed Dominic inside. The ballroom was bustling, women and men alike were all around. Dancing, eating, talking. It was crowded, bodies squeezed together and a decent sized line to get food. Some women looked like nobles with expensive jewelry sitting on their fingers and necks, while others had much less. Dominic elbowed Scott, jerking his head to a gaggle of ladies. "There's your pile, man. I would get to them before they scope out more handsome men to dance with." Scott nodded, "I'm going to grab one for us both, wait for me!" "Don't drink too much, you'll start dancing the funky chicken and we'll never be able to step foot in this palace again!" He called with a good-hearted laugh.

Dominic glanced around, eyeing all the women. The princess was somewhere in here, as well as the beauty from earlier. He was more worried about the girl he met than the princess. He had no chance with an actual princess, but at least a maid would be willing to give him the time of say. He grabbed a non-alcoholic drink off a tray and seated himself at one of the fancy golden tables. Balls were always weird for him, he wasn't sure what to do. He supposed he could ask a lady to dance at some point, unless one asked him first.

Scarlet scanned the faces of those in the ball room from her place on one of the balconies above them. She had been down there among her guest before being summoned to the private balcony by Narcisse. "Your Highness," her adviser started. "I'd like you to meet Lord Sebastian de' Medici." Narcisse stepped to the side to reveal the foreign noble and Scarlet waited a moment longer to scan the crowd bellow her before turning to face the newcomer. Tall and handsome, the picture of a perfect young nobleman. Scarlet presented him with a courteous smile she perfected at a young age for precisely these moments. "A pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Lord Sebastian." She dipped her chin and he bowed low. "The pleasure is mine, Princess Scarlet." He said as he straightened. She clasped her hands in front of her, shoulders set and head held high, the very picture of royalty. "Bold of you to request a private audience when there are so many attending who do not have enough power to risk the same." He chuckled low and took a step forward. "You shouldn't be concerning yourself with those people down there when you need to concentrate on strengthening you position on your fathers throne." Scarlet blinked. "Those people down there are my people. They are the ones that work the farms. They are the scientists, the doctors, the blacksmiths, the butchers, the bakers, the shop owners, the ones I am able to call upon in times of need. They are the most important people in this Kingdom and they all deserve equal opportunity, Lord Sebastian." She didn't wait for a reply. He held quite the status in his own Kingdom but that didn't impress her at all. "Now if you don't mind, I will not be rude to my guests anymore and the next time you want to talk, you will find me down there among my people." She nodded to Narcisse, the frown on his face clearly displaying his displeasure, before she left them both standing there.

She met Jessica outside the private balcony and handed her the small tiara tucked neatly into her hair. She felt silly whenever she wore it and knew it wouldn't get any better when she had to take her fathers crown. "Let's go find some decent young men without the huge ego that comes with the privileged." Jessica flashed her a huge smile as they descended the steps that lead to the main ballroom floor. "I can get behind that, Your Highness."

Dominic watched the crowd with a sigh. These balls were never for him. Of course, a few women had already asked him if he would accompany them onto the dance floor. But he kindly refused, knowing that if he tried he would end up stepping on their foot. He was too distracted. He was watching Scott out of the corner of his eye, making sure he didn't get into too much trouble. All the while he was trying to keep a look out for the servant girl. It was a tiring sport, he decided to get some food and seat himself back at his table. He was chewing on a piece of shrimp when trumpets sounded. The dancing kept going, but everyone who was seated turned their heads. The princess was walking down the stairs into the ballroom. The guards bowed to her as she descended. Dominic watched for a moment, the princess was way too far away from his table for him to get a good look. He squinted, noting the flaming red hair, but he deflated quickly. He didn't have a chance with even a maid of the princess, so there was no point in even seeking the princess out. Dominic downed some fruit punch from the punch bowl and steeled himself for the next girl to ask him to dance. He was going to say yes no matter what this time, not having much of a choice at a ball where he was supposed to find a wife.

Scarlet watched the flow of the dancers as she reached the last step. She could tell who was who by the way they danced. The nobles and the rich all moved in time with the music and each other, and it was obvious they were showing off to the rest of Scarlet's guests. Of whom had their own style of dancing. She had mingled with them earlier in the night before most of the people arrived and wanted to make the most of having so many fresh, new faces around. She wasn't going to lie, she was looking for a particular handsome face she met that day in the tailor's shop. He could be anywhere, if he'd even arrived yet and she never asked for his name. She was glad she turned down the idea of a masquerade ball. She turned to Jessica and leaned in close so the maid could hear her words over the sound of the music. "Keep an eye out for that young man we meet in the town, I'm curious to know if he made it." Jess smiled and nodded. "Of course, anything for you, Scarlet." She headed out to mingle with the crowd, recognizing a good deal of faces from prominent, rich families and stopped to talk with a few of them. Jess trailed behind her, doing exactly what she said she would and it wasn't until a small time later the maid saw what she was looking for.

She rushed from the princesses side, knowing Scarlet with the group of young nobles she was now talking with. Jess approached the young man from earlier in the day, and noticed he was sitting alone watching all the other dancers. She stopped a few steps from him, her hands clasped in front of her. "Hello, again." She started. "It's a little overwhelming isn't it?"

Dominic could feel someone had been staring at his back for a while, and it left an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach. Then he felt a slap on the shoulder. Looking up, Dominic let out a small sigh of relief. "Scott, you scared me man," He laughed. Scott had a lady on his arm, and it wasn't the red haired beauty. "I've found me a dance partner, bud. So don't wait up for me, ok?" He chuckled and nuzzled the lady's neck. She giggled and swatted at his shoulder playfully. "No problems there, amigo. Enjoy it!" Dominic called to Scott as they got on the dance-floor. He knew that Scott was a horrible dancer, the woman would probably be embarrassed to be seen with him after one dance. Dominic was ready for poor old Scott to come crawling back within a couple minutes with his sad puppy-dog eyes. While he was waiting and just watching, he heard a familiar voice behind him. He turned slightly, looking over his shoulder. His breath caught in his throat and he hastily got up. "Yes, you were with the red-haired woman today, right?" He scratched the back of his head with an embarrassed chuckle, "Is it that obvious I'm out of place here?" He paused, "Yeah, overwhelming is definitely the word. But, I could get a bit loose if I danced a couple times with the right girl and some alcohol," He joked. "Is the...uh, other beautiful lady here somewhere as well?"
